President Trump has cut all trade talks with Canada, claiming the country used an ad featuring Ronald Reagan to “interfere” with US court decisions.
“Based on their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated,” Trump posted on truth social. He called the ad “fake.”
The ad, from Ontario, quoted Reagan’s 1987 warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.” It was a protest against 35% US tariffs on Canadian steel and timber.
The ad’s use of the speech has been challenged by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The foundation stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the speech and was used without permission.
This move freezes the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship, a vital artery for the Canadian economy. PM Mark Carney vowed to continue seeking dialogue.
