Under a Cloud: Musk’s DC Departure Marred by Reports and Bruises

Date:

Elon Musk’s 138-day journey as a “special government employee” in the Trump administration ended in a highly public and somewhat unsettling Oval Office farewell. Despite President Trump’s effusive praise, Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) fell far short of its ambitious $2 trillion savings target, casting a shadow of unfulfilled promises over his departure.
The ceremony itself was peculiar, with Trump explicitly stating its focus was on Musk, not himself. This unusual acknowledgment set the tone for a briefing where the president lauded Musk as an unparalleled innovator, even as public opinion polls indicated a significant decline in the tech mogul’s popularity and a notable dip in the stock of his flagship company, Tesla.
Further adding to the disquiet was a report from a prominent news organization, detailing alleged drug use by Musk and his critical stance on a new tax bill. While Trump vehemently dismissed the source, Musk himself conspicuously avoided any direct denial or comment, leaving the allegations hanging in the air and contributing to a sense of unresolved controversy.
The most visible sign of Musk’s tumultuous tenure was a black eye, which he attributed to playful roughhousing with his young son. This seemingly innocuous explanation became a striking visual metaphor for the metaphorical bruises his reputation had sustained during his brief, often chaotic, foray into the heart of Washington. His final, broad critique of the left underscored his increasingly polarizing persona.
