The metaphor of getting back on the horse “however you can” perfectly captured Liverpool’s ungainly 2-0 victory over West Ham. Whether requiring “a stepladder, an awkward bunk from a scornful stablehand and an ungainly scramble into the saddle,” Liverpool will care little about aesthetics after six defeats in their previous seven league matches. Any victory, however inelegant, was desperately welcome.
The performance matched this ungainly description. The football was often poor, particularly during a forgettable first half where genuine excitement proved scarce. Tactical adjustments produced defensive improvement but limited attacking fluency. Goals came from patient build-up rather than flowing movement. Nothing about the victory suggested Liverpool had rediscovered their best form.
However, context matters enormously when evaluating performances and results. For a team in crisis, having lost six of seven league matches and conceded three or more goals in three straight games for the first time in 75 years, simply winning represents significant progress. The manner of victory becomes secondary to the fact of victory when confidence has evaporated.
The ungainly scramble back to winning ways may actually prove beneficial long-term. Teams that win only when playing well can become fragile when form dips. Learning to grind out victories during difficult periods—winning ugly when necessary—builds resilience and character. Liverpool needed to demonstrate they could secure three points without playing excellently.
Moving forward, Liverpool must improve their performances while maintaining this results-focused mentality. The ungainly victory over West Ham bought time and restored some confidence, but sustained success requires better football than they produced at the London Stadium. For now, though, they’ll accept getting back in the saddle however possible, knowing that riding style can be refined once balance is restored. The important thing was stopping the fall and starting the climb back.
