Winter travel can be magical, but the cold, snow, and ice present a unique set of challenges for pets. Whether you’re heading for the hills or just navigating a chilly climate, these tips will ensure your pet stays warm, safe, and happy.
Bundle up and stay dry. Just like us, pets can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia. For short-haired breeds or smaller animals, a well-fitting sweater or coat is essential. Ensure their carrier is well-insulated and protected from drafts. A warm, fleecy blanket inside is a must. After any time in the snow, dry them off thoroughly, paying special attention to their paws.
Protect their paws. Icy sidewalks and de-icing chemicals can be brutal on a pet’s paw pads. Consider using pet-safe booties to provide a barrier against the cold and harmful salts. If booties aren’t an option, use a paw balm before and after walks, and always wipe their paws clean to remove any chemical residue.
Adjust their food and water. Pets may burn more calories in the winter to stay warm, so a slight increase in their food might be necessary, especially if they are active. Also, ensure their water doesn’t freeze. On road trips, don’t leave their water bowl in a freezing car overnight. Keeping them warm, dry, and well-fed is the key to a successful winter journey.
