Far-Right Surge in Romania: Simion’s First-Round Win Signals Potential EU Rift

Date:

Romania is on the brink of a political shift that could echo across Europe, as far-right candidate George Simion claimed a commanding lead in the first round of the country’s presidential election rerun. With all ballots counted, Simion secured 40.96% of the vote—nearly double that of centrist rival Nicușor Dan, who advanced to the runoff with 20.99%.

Simion, 38, leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has campaigned on a hardline sovereignist and socially conservative platform. A vocal admirer of Donald Trump and Italy’s far-right leadership, he calls for a “Melonisation” of Europe—invoking a vision of a Europe led by nationalist forces. His opposition to EU military aid for Ukraine and criticism of what he calls Brussels’ overreach have raised concerns about potential disruptions in the EU’s internal cohesion.

The runoff, scheduled for 18 May, is now framed as a clash between opposing visions for Romania: Dan, the pro-European former mayor of Bucharest and founder of the Save Romania Union (USR), is positioning himself as a defender of Romania’s western alignment, democratic values, and anti-corruption stance.

“This election isn’t just between two candidates—it’s between two paths for Romania,” Dan said, acknowledging the uphill battle ahead. Analysts warn that voter fragmentation among pro-European parties could work in Simion’s favor.

Simion’s performance was overwhelming across the country—winning in 36 of 47 districts and dominating the overseas vote with 61%. His rise from fringe politics to frontrunner status marks a significant challenge to Romania’s pro-Western political establishment.

With the Romanian presidency holding key influence over foreign policy, defense, and EU representation, a Simion victory could steer the nation toward a more isolationist and confrontational stance within the EU—aligning Romania more closely with leaders like Viktor Orbán of Hungary.
