Trump “Disappointed” by Putin’s Stance, Ukraine Aid Stalls

Date:

President Donald Trump expressed considerable “disappointment” after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, revealing that Putin was unwilling to make concessions to end the war in Ukraine. This diplomatic impasse coincides with a reported halt in US military aid to Ukraine, including critical Patriot air defense missiles, due to a review of US stockpiles. The news comes as Russia launched a record-breaking aerial bombardment on Kyiv.
Following his call with Putin, Trump had a “good conversation” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who focused on Ukraine’s air defense needs, joint defense production, and “mutual purchases and investments” as potential ways to incentivize the resumption of US aid. Zelenskyy’s efforts highlight the urgent requirement for munitions to counter Russia’s intensified aggression.
The devastating Russian air attack on Kyiv, which occurred just hours after the Trump-Putin call, was described by Zelenskyy as a “clear interpretation of how Moscow interprets diplomacy.” This underscores the Kremlin’s continued aggressive stance despite international efforts to de-escalate the conflict. The ongoing bombardments put immense pressure on Ukraine’s dwindling air defense capabilities.
With US aid temporarily suspended, Germany has stepped up, confirming “intensive talks” to explore options for acquiring Patriot missiles for Ukraine. This initiative by a major European ally signals a recognition of the critical need to fortify Ukraine’s defenses and fill the void created by the uncertainty in US military assistance.
