Pressure Mounts on SpaceX as 911.5 Million Shares Hit Market

Date:

SpaceX is experiencing potential selling pressure as a substantial 911.5 million shares are set to become eligible for trading. This development provides an opportunity for certain employees and early investors to sell their shares, which they acquired prior to the company’s record-breaking initial public offering (IPO). On Wednesday, the stock saw a significant decline, falling nearly 14% to close at $108.27, marking its second-largest single-day drop. This downturn leaves the shares approximately 20% below the IPO price of $135, occurring just weeks after SpaceX’s debut on the public market.

Initially, SpaceX offered a limited portion of its shares for public trading, which created a shortage and fueled strong demand post-IPO. The imminent release of additional shares is expected to significantly expand the number available to investors, potentially introducing short-term market volatility. Notably, the unlocking of shares doesn’t imply that all 911.5 million will be sold immediately. Employees and early investors retain the option to either keep their shares or sell them, and those who purchased at lower valuations before the IPO might be inclined to take profits.

SpaceX has implemented a staggered schedule for releasing restricted shares instead of adhering to a single traditional lock-up period. This approach means further releases are anticipated later in the year, which could result in billions more Class A shares becoming available for trading. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and other senior executives are subject to a longer restriction period, with their shares remaining locked past the current release. Musk’s holdings are a significant component of SpaceX’s overall value, making the timing of future executive share unlocks particularly relevant to investors.

The increase in the number of publicly traded shares could also impact SpaceX’s weighting in the Nasdaq-100 index. Currently, SpaceX holds a weighting of around 1%, but this could potentially rise above 3.5% depending on the stock price and the number of shares available at the time of the next index adjustment. While the unlocking of shares might introduce short-term selling pressure, it does not directly affect SpaceX’s core business operations. Investors will likely maintain their focus on the company’s financial health, growth potential, investments in artificial intelligence, and execution of long-term strategic plans.
