South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has stepped back from public duties following his return from the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, upon advice from his medical team to take a rest. Ramaphosa, who participated in the summit held from September 12 to 13, arrived back in South Africa on Monday.
The BRICS Summit, an annual gathering focusing on global governance, economic cooperation, trade, and development, saw leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa convene to discuss critical international issues. Despite Ramaphosa’s withdrawal from public engagements, the South African Presidency has assured that ministers will step in to represent him where necessary during his recovery period. Specific details about Ramaphosa’s health condition have not been disclosed.
This development coincides with Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s recovery from a medical procedure. Despite the temporary absence of the country’s two senior leaders, governmental operations continue to function normally, with responsibilities being managed through their respective offices.
