EFF Promises R4,500 Monthly Pension if Victorious, Says Malema

Date:

Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has pledged to raise South Africa’s SASSA old-age pension to R4,500 per month if his party gains power. This promise was made during the EFF’s provincial manifesto launch event in North West. Malema emphasized that an EFF-led administration would safeguard social grants and enhance financial aid for the elderly, offering them more substantial support.

Currently, the old-age grant in South Africa is R2,400 monthly, with those over 75 receiving slightly more at R2,420. Malema criticized the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for what he sees as insufficient support for senior citizens, highlighting that these individuals have contributed to the nation through taxes during their working years. He also condemned the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, labeling it inadequate, and called for the introduction of a new grant aimed at unemployed graduates.

Malema reiterated his proposal for the R4,500 old-age grant while speaking in Mpumalanga. He argued that many pensioners are financially supporting their children and grandchildren, and thus require more substantial aid. According to Malema, the government could make this increase viable by utilizing public funds more efficiently.

With the local government elections set for November 4, issues such as social grants, unemployment, and the rising cost of living are expected to be significant talking points as political parties ramp up their campaigns. Malema’s proposals are likely to resonate with many voters who are concerned about the adequacy of current social support systems.
