Mississippi state regulators have officially greenlit a 41-turbine natural gas power plant for Elon Musk’s xAI. The permit allows the company to power its Colossus 2 AI supercomputer, which is used to develop the Grok AI model. The decision has sparked a firestorm of criticism from residents and the NAACP, who describe the project as an “industrial surge.”
The turbines provide the 1.2 gigawatts of power needed to run xAI’s massive arrays of high-performance chips. By creating its own electricity, xAI ensures that its supercomputers can operate at peak performance without straining the public grid. This strategy is a cornerstone of Musk’s effort to dominate the global artificial intelligence market.
Local opposition to the project has been vocal and persistent, with the NAACP filing a notice of intent to sue over alleged pollution issues. Residents have complained of “excruciating” noise and a decline in air quality since the turbines first went live. Despite these concerns, the MDEQ maintained that the permit meets all applicable state and federal standards.
Environmental groups warn that the 41 turbines will release significant amounts of toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.
