The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) concluded there was insufficient evidence to ensure a successful prosecution of Masemola, following a comprehensive review that included input from the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption and assessments by a case evaluation panel and independent legal counsel. Despite the withdrawal of charges, Masemola’s suspension remains in effect, pending a decision from President Ramaphosa on his reinstatement.
Masemola has expressed his readiness to return to his role following the legal clearance, but the decision ultimately rests with the president. The wider investigation into the Medicare24 contract continues, targeting other individuals who face allegations of corruption and irregularities.
Ramaphosa acknowledged the NPA’s decision but emphasized that the government has not yet reached a conclusion on Masemola’s suspension. The outcome of this decision will determine whether Masemola resumes his duties as the head of the national police.
