Over 60,000 Zimbabwean nationals have made their way back from South Africa as Zimbabwe rolls out enhanced initiatives to aid their reintegration. In a collaborative effort between the South African and Zimbabwean governments, 11,065 individuals were officially repatriated, while a larger group of 47,703 chose to return voluntarily. This group includes 2,449 adult men, 2,407 adult women, and 4,955 minors.
Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has called on families and communities to extend a warm welcome to these returnees. He emphasized that the government has put in place a range of comprehensive strategies to ensure that their reintegration into society is both dignified and seamless.
George Charamba, a prominent official, highlighted that many of those returning bring with them valuable skills, particularly in the horticulture sector. This could significantly enhance Zimbabwe’s economic strength and bolster its capacity for export. Charamba noted that these skills are coming at a crucial time as the economy continues to grow, presenting new opportunities for citizens returning to their homeland.
