Iran Promises to Reopen Hormuz Strait if US Reduces Military Presence

Date:

Iran has proposed to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz within a week, contingent on the United States reducing military pressure and lifting its blockade on Iranian ports, a senior Iranian official disclosed on Tuesday. The offer, aiming to de-escalate tensions over a vital global energy route, was made to the U.S. through mediators on September 16.

The Iranian proposal also calls for the United States to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing dispute. Further discussions might occur through intermediaries during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is currently attending. Despite his presence, no direct meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump has been scheduled.

With tensions high over the strategic waterway, Iran’s condition for reopening the Strait of Hormuz involves a reduction in American military activities. Tehran has cautioned that any continuation of U.S. military operations could provoke a retaliatory response.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed openness to dialogue with Iranian officials at the General Assembly, although no formal meeting has been arranged. Rubio emphasized that any potential engagement would need to align with efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

This diplomatic overture comes as both Iran and the U.S. face mounting pressure to pursue a peaceful resolution not only to the security concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz but also to the broader issues tied to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
