Starting June 1, 2026, South Africa will require all travelers entering or exiting the country to use a new digital customs declaration system. This initiative mandates travelers to submit their declarations online, aiming to modernize the border management process and enhance compliance with customs regulations.
Alongside these updates, individuals bringing foreign-registered vehicles into South Africa must declare them at entry points and secure a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). This rule applies to vehicles registered in all foreign countries, including those within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) member states. Travelers with a TIP can legally operate their vehicles in South Africa for six months, with the added flexibility of multiple entries and exits during that period without needing a new permit each time.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) emphasizes that the new system is designed to streamline travel and trade procedures while bolstering border security and revenue collection. The online declaration and permit processes are free of charge, and travelers can complete them via the SARS website or mobile app before arriving at the border. A reference number will be issued to present upon entry or departure.
To assist those who haven’t completed their declarations in advance, SARS will offer help through digital kiosks and support services at border posts. Despite the shift to digital processes, necessary customs inspections and border checks will still be conducted. This digital transition is part of South Africa’s broader strategy to update customs administration and enhance the management of cross-border movement of people, goods, and vehicles.
