Trump Halts Planned US Military Strikes on Houthis After Initial Orders

Date:

President Donald Trump has once again postponed a decision on conducting military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, despite the U.S. military’s readiness for potential operations. This delay comes after a series of discussions and preparations in response to Saudi Arabia’s calls for intervention against the Iran-backed Houthis, who have ramped up attacks on Saudi interests.

Initially opposed to military action, Trump had directed the Pentagon to prepare for possible airstrikes following a conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, by Sunday, the administration had opted to hold off on the strikes temporarily, even as military preparations had progressed with target lists approved and warplanes on standby.

This decision occurs against the backdrop of the United States’ ongoing involvement in broader regional conflicts with Iran. Some U.S. officials have raised concerns about the potential strain on military resources if America opens another front against the Houthis, who have been engaged in a long-standing conflict with Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.

The situation in Yemen has seen a resurgence of conflict after a lull in fighting, with renewed attacks and increased tensions around strategic areas like the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. These developments have heightened concerns regarding regional security and the stability of global energy supplies.

There is also skepticism among U.S. officials and regional experts about the effectiveness of airstrikes in persuading the Houthis to change their stance, given that previous military actions have not led to a lasting resolution. The complexity of the conflict and its implications continue to pose challenges for U.S. foreign policy in the region.
