UN Probes $7,000 “Body Ransoms” as Iranian Government Braces for International Sanctions Surge

Date:

United Nations Special Rapporteur Mai Sato is investigating reports that the Iranian government is demanding ransoms of up to $7,000 from families wishing to retrieve the bodies of loved ones killed in protests. While the government denies these claims, the international outcry is fueling calls for more aggressive action from the West. The Iranian government is bracing for a surge in sanctions and potential military strikes justified by these egregious human rights violations.
The Italian Foreign Minister’s recommendation to label the IRGC a proscribed organization in Europe further isolates the regime. This diplomatic pressure coincides with the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln, creating a pincer movement of legal and military threats. The Iranian government is bracing for a strike that would likely target IRGC headquarters and detention centers where thousands of protesters are reportedly being held.
The massive death toll, estimated by some groups at over 5,000, has created a situation where the clerical leadership has little domestic legitimacy left. The U.S. administration is reportedly divided on whether to push for full regime change, but the “firepower” available in the Mediterranean suggests that the option is firmly on the table. The government is bracing for an attack that would be the largest since the 12-day war in June.
