Judge Permits States’ Lawsuit Against Meta for Social Media Addiction Claims

Date:

A federal judge in the United States has dismissed Meta Platforms’ bid to throw out a lawsuit brought by 29 state attorneys general. The lawsuit accuses the tech giant of intentionally making Facebook and Instagram addictive for children while hiding the associated risks. The court’s decision allows the case to proceed, specifically focusing on allegations of misleading practices, unfair business tactics, and breaches of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

The judge found that Meta did not comply with certain parental notice and consent stipulations required by federal law. The states involved in the lawsuit argue that excessive use of these social media platforms has been linked to various mental health issues among younger users. These include anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and negative impacts on education and daily activities. The states claim that Meta deliberately designed features to promote extended engagement, despite being aware of these potential harms.

Meta has refuted these allegations, maintaining its commitment to supporting young users on its platforms. The company argues that there is no established medical definition for what constitutes “social media addiction.” Nonetheless, the judge noted that there are factual disagreements regarding whether the platforms were consciously engineered to foster compulsive use, and these issues remain for a jury to resolve at trial.

This decision marks a significant step in the ongoing legal battle, as it allows the core issues of the lawsuit to be examined in court. The case emphasizes the growing scrutiny on social media companies and their responsibilities in safeguarding young users. It reflects broader concerns about the impact of digital platforms on mental health, particularly among children and teenagers, who are increasingly reliant on these technologies for social interaction and information.
