The name of Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa’s President, surfaced during testimony given by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to the Madlanga Commission. The commission is delving into allegations of corruption within the country’s criminal justice system and focused on the transfer of confidential information between Matlala and senior police officials. Matlala was interrogated about a document containing personal data supposedly linked to Ramaphosa. He clarified that he merely forwarded the document to former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head, Major-General Lesetja Senona, after obtaining it from private investigator Calvin Rafadi. Matlala’s statements did not associate Ramaphosa with any misconduct.
Further scrutiny by the commission was directed at the bond between Matlala and Senona. During his testimony, Matlala portrayed Senona as an “older brother,” revealing that Senona had loaned him R20,000 after a police raid on his Pretoria residence in December 2024. This relationship was examined in the context of the broader investigation of potential political interference and corruption within law enforcement.
Additionally, Matlala made allegations involving Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, the suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner. He accused Sergeant Fannie Nkosi of serving as an intermediary in the purported collection of money from certain individuals in Gauteng. Matlala refrained from naming these individuals, invoking his right against self-incrimination due to ongoing separate criminal proceedings against him.
