South Africa has emerged as the second-best global destination for wildlife holidays, according to a recent international survey. This accolade underscores the country’s esteemed position in nature and safari tourism. Researchers surveyed 2,400 travelers from 12 different countries, revealing that 72% of participants prioritize wildlife experiences when selecting their holiday spots. This heightened interest is mirrored in digital behavior, with online searches for “wildlife holidays” surging by 211% over the past year.
Australia snagged the top spot in the rankings, with South Africa closely following, outpacing renowned wildlife hotspots like Kenya, Canada, and China. South Africa’s appeal lies in its varied ecosystems and abundant biodiversity, drawing tourists eager for adventures ranging from the iconic Big Five safaris to whale watching, birding, and interactions with African penguins.
The findings indicate a shift in travel trends, with an increasing number of tourists gravitating towards immersive nature experiences rather than conventional sightseeing. This trend reflects a broader change in travel preferences as more individuals seek to connect deeply with nature during their vacations.
Globally, the animal that travelers most wish to see in the wild is the giant panda, followed by elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Notably, among Africa’s celebrated Big Five, the elephant is the only one to make it into the global top five, highlighting its widespread appeal and significance to wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
