In a recent meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored the need for a new security framework in the Middle East rooted in cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty. Xi proposed a four-point strategy aimed at bolstering regional security cooperation, addressing interlinked conflicts, fostering economic development, and enhancing international coordination. He emphasized the importance of regional countries taking on more responsibility for their security and criticized the interference of external powers in regional affairs. Highlighting the Palestinian issue as central to broader Middle Eastern tensions, Xi reiterated China’s commitment to a peaceful resolution.
China also conveyed its readiness to work with Middle Eastern countries to safeguard international shipping lanes, promote economic growth, and tackle the root causes of conflict. Xi called for adherence to the United Nations Charter and international law as the foundation for addressing regional challenges. The discussions between the two leaders placed strong emphasis on advancing China-Egypt economic ties, with Xi advocating for expanded partnerships in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communication, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy.
China holds the position of Egypt’s largest trading partner and main source of imports, a status it has maintained for 14 consecutive years. Bilateral trade between the two nations has witnessed significant growth, escalating from $10.21 billion in 2013 to an anticipated $20.79 billion by 2025. This economic relationship is poised for further expansion through the signing of over 20 cooperation agreements encompassing fields such as artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains.
The two countries also released a joint statement aimed at reinforcing their comprehensive strategic partnership. The agreements and statements reflect a mutual commitment to deepening ties and collaboration across various sectors, strengthening the economic and strategic bonds between China and Egypt. These developments underscore the strategic importance both nations place on their relationship and their shared vision of regional cooperation and development.
