A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for South Africa’s Limpopo province, as well as most parts of Gauteng and the south-western areas of the Mpumalanga Highveld. The yellow level 4 weather warning is set to take effect on Friday, 6 November, from 1pm until 11:59pm. Residents in these regions are advised to prepare for heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds.
The anticipated severe thunderstorms pose significant risks, including potential flooding, property damage, and disruptions to transport and essential services. Heavy rainfall may lead to flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and settlements. Rising water levels in rivers and streams could create hazardous conditions, with fast-moving water posing a serious threat to life.
Strong winds accompanying the storms could damage buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure, and may also uproot trees, leading to blocked roads. Additionally, large amounts of small hail are predicted, particularly in populated areas, which could exacerbate property damage and risk to individuals.
Other potential impacts include damage to both formal and informal settlements, loss of livestock and property, community displacement, and temporary interruptions to electricity and communication services. Flooding could also necessitate road and bridge closures, further disrupting daily life and emergency response efforts.
Authorities advise residents in affected areas to take precautions by avoiding crossing flooded roads and rivers and staying away from open fields and trees during thunderstorms. It is recommended for people to remain indoors during severe weather, maintain a safe distance from windows, and unplug sensitive electrical appliances where possible to prevent damage from power surges.
