Zelensky Confirms Broad Contours of New US Arms Pact Agreed with Trump

Date:

President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that the “broad contours” of a new arms pact with the United States were agreed upon during his recent meeting with President Donald Trump. This high-level understanding now paves the way for detailed negotiations on the purchase of advanced weaponry, including long-range systems.
Speaking in Kyiv, Zelensky announced that a Ukrainian delegation would soon travel to the US for technical meetings to work on the “practical implementation” of this agreement. The visit, planned for the end of September or early October, will be crucial for finalizing the specifics of the new deals, which are intended to supplement an existing $90 billion aid framework.
The primary focus of the new pact is to provide Ukraine with enhanced long-range strike capabilities. This has been a long-standing request from Kyiv, which argues that such weapons are essential to disrupt Russian logistics and command structures effectively, thereby altering the battlefield in Ukraine’s favor.
In a sign of the partnership’s evolving nature, the agreement also includes provisions for the US to explore acquiring Ukrainian military technology. Zelensky stated that technical teams would work on the details of a potential US purchase of Ukrainian drones, a testament to their combat effectiveness.
This comprehensive approach to military cooperation is being bolstered by immediate improvements to Ukraine’s defenses. Zelensky revealed the recent arrival of a US-made Patriot air defense system from Israel and announced that two more are expected in the fall. This ensures that Ukraine’s defensive capabilities are keeping pace with its ambitions for greater offensive power.
