ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has dismissed speculation of a standoff between President Cyril Ramaphosa and former president Thabo Mbeki regarding the upcoming national dialogue. Concerns were raised after several legacy foundations withdrew from the convention, citing issues of transparency, government control, and budget oversight.
Mbalula stressed that the withdrawal should not be seen as a clash between the two leaders. He acknowledged the concerns but insisted they are being addressed through proper engagement. According to him, Mbeki’s contributions remain constructive and valuable to the ANC, even when they challenge the party leadership.
He highlighted that Mbeki was one of the original advocates for the dialogue and continues to play an important role in shaping its vision. Mbalula reiterated that the dialogue belongs to all South Africans and is not an ANC-controlled process.
Rejecting claims that the initiative is a political public relations exercise, Mbalula said the dialogue is rooted in the principles of the Freedom Charter and aims to ensure inclusive participation from all sectors of society. He urged citizens, especially the unemployed, women, and youth, to take part in shaping the country’s future.
