Ramaphosa Honors Late Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa as a Gallant Leader and Champion of the Oppressed

Date:

President Cyril Ramaphosa paid a heartfelt tribute to the late South African ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, describing him as a gallant leader who dedicated his life to the fight for justice and equality. Speaking at Mthethwa’s funeral in Dondotha village near Richards Bay, Ramaphosa said Mthethwa embodied the true spirit of activism, leadership, and sacrifice throughout his life.
Ramaphosa praised Mthethwa’s lifelong commitment to the cause of the oppressed, recalling his early activism in Pinetown, where he fought for workers’ rights under apartheid. “Comrade Nathi led by example from the beginning to the end. He always excelled in every task bestowed on him,” Ramaphosa said, adding that Mthethwa’s courage and conviction helped shape South Africa’s path to freedom.
The president emphasized that Mthethwa’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations, noting his belief that activism was not just about protest but about purpose and service to humanity. “He placed himself on the front lines, not for glory, but for the dignity and equality of every person,” Ramaphosa said.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli commended Mthethwa for his pivotal role in promoting peace between the ANC and IFP, while ANC NEC member Malusi Gigaba and family members remembered him as a source of strength, integrity, and pride. Ramaphosa concluded by urging South Africans to draw lessons from Mthethwa’s life of integrity and selfless leadership.
