From Steel to Servers: Welsh City Embodies Hope of $3Tn AI Boom

Date:

In Newport, Wales, the 19th-century economy of coal and steel is giving way to the 21st-century economy of data and AI. A new Microsoft datacenter, being built on the site of an old radiator factory, embodies the hope and “generational employment opportunity” of the $3 trillion global AI spending spree.
Dimitri Batrouni, the city’s council leader, sees the project as a vital pivot: “Do you worry about the past… or do you embrace the future?” This sentiment is shared by locals like Mike O’Connell, a construction consultant who has returned to his hometown to work on the site, where his grandson is now an electrical apprentice.
This local story of optimism is a reflection of the “current positivity” in the global market. Tech valuations are at record highs, with Nvidia at $5tn and Microsoft at $4tn. Google’s parent, Alphabet, just posted a $100bn quarter, driven by demand for its AI infrastructure.
These “hyperscalers” are spending $750bn in the next two years to build out this “central nervous system” for AI. Microsoft’s Newport site, which will cost hundreds of millions, is just one piece of this global puzzle.
While analysts in California and New York debate whether this “debt-fueled exuberance” is a “bubble,” the community in Newport is betting on a tangible boom. They are counting on this $3tn investment to deliver a long-term, high-tech future, just as steel and coal did generations ago.
