Mac Users Losing ChatGPT Desktop Voice Conversations

Date:

An upcoming change affects ChatGPT users on Mac computers. Voice interaction through the macOS desktop application will be discontinued effective January 15, 2026. OpenAI described this decision in update documentation as necessary for creating more cohesive voice experiences across its platforms.
The discontinuation is limited to the Mac desktop app exclusively. Voice functionality remains available through the ChatGPT website, which functions on any browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android platforms. Windows desktop users also retain their voice access. Mac is the only desktop platform losing this feature.
While OpenAI hasn’t provided comprehensive reasoning, the statement about unified experiences suggests technical considerations. The current Mac app’s voice implementation may not fit with broader strategic plans for voice technology. As voice becomes more prominent in AI services, ensuring consistency across platforms becomes increasingly important.
Users who have built voice into their routines face practical challenges. People utilizing voice for accessibility needs, individuals who efficiently multitask with hands-free conversation, or those who prefer verbal communication will all need new solutions. Web or mobile alternatives exist but may not provide identical experiences.
Technology experts generally believe this removal is temporary. OpenAI’s substantial commitment to voice technology across other products suggests Mac users will eventually see enhanced voice features return. The current discontinuation likely enables infrastructure improvements that the existing Mac app cannot support.
