The Dos and Don’ts of Packing for a Family Flight

Date:

When packing for a long-haul flight with children, a few smart choices can make all the difference. Navigating the dos and don’ts of carry-on luggage is crucial for a smooth and stress-free journey. By following a simple set of guidelines, parents can ensure they are perfectly prepared for the hours ahead, avoiding common pitfalls and setting the stage for a great vacation.
Do pack your own snacks and drinks. Don’t rely on the airline to cater to your child’s specific tastes or schedule. Packing a variety of familiar, mess-free foods and a reusable water bottle for everyone gives you complete control over your family’s nourishment and hydration, which is the number one rule for happy young travelers.
Do bring a mix of screen and non-screen entertainment. Don’t assume a tablet alone will suffice. While a device loaded with movies is a lifesaver, batteries can die and kids can experience screen fatigue. Supplement it with lightweight options like sticker books, magnetic puzzles, or a new chapter book to ensure you have a variety of ways to keep them engaged.
Do prioritize comfort with familiar items and extra clothes. Don’t underestimate how cold a plane cabin can get or the likelihood of a spill. A favorite small blanket and a travel pillow can help a child settle down to rest. A full change of clothes is an absolute must-have for every child in your carry-on; it’s a simple solution to a very uncomfortable problem.
Do keep essentials organized and accessible. Don’t throw everything into one big bag. Use pouches or folders for your critical items. A small first-aid kit should be ready for minor issues. All passports and tickets should be in one dedicated travel wallet. And a portable power bank must be included to keep your essential devices charged and ready.
Do use zip-top plastic bags to an almost obsessive degree. Use them to organize snacks, pack pre-portioned activities, waterproof your electronics, and, most importantly, to quarantine any soiled or wet clothing after a spill, keeping the rest of your carry-on clean and dry.
