China Accuses Philippines of “Egregious” Act After Ship Collision

Date:

China has accused the Philippines of committing an “egregious” act at sea, alleging that a Philippine vessel deliberately rammed one of its ships on Tuesday. The collision near the contested Scarborough Shoal occurred during a tense confrontation where the Chinese Coast Guard also used water cannons to repel a large Philippine flotilla.
The Chinese narrative holds the Philippines entirely responsible for the incident. According to a statement from its Coast Guard, over ten Philippine government ships approached the shoal, prompting a response. The subsequent collision was described by Beijing as an intentional and provocative act by Manila.
The timing of this clash is highly suspect, coming just six days after China announced its controversial plan to designate the area as a “national nature reserve.” This move was widely seen as a pretext to solidify its control over the shoal, which the Philippines refers to as Bajo de Masinloc. A formal protest from Manila was expected.
The South China Sea is a region of critical importance, and the Scarborough Shoal is one of its most volatile flashpoints. China’s claim to nearly the entire sea is a source of constant friction with its neighbors, who have competing, and in many cases internationally recognized, claims to parts of the waterway.
International support for the Philippines is becoming more vocal. A prominent US senator denounced China’s “coercive” behavior. The UK and Australia have also publicly expressed their unease. In a clear rebuke of Beijing’s strategy, Canadian diplomats in the Philippines stated their opposition to using environmentalism as a tool for territorial expansion.
